A chilling new video has emerged, shedding light on the tragic Brown University shooting that shocked the world. This footage, released by city officials, captures the harrowing moments following the deadly attack. News outlets across the globe had been clamoring for body camera footage and other records, eager to understand the events that unfolded.
The newly released material includes an audio clip of a campus police officer reporting the shooting. "This is Brown police. We have confirmed gunshots at 184 Hope Street. We have a victim, but we don't know their location," the officer said. Four minutes later, an update: "Suspect description: all black, ski mask, direction unknown."
Additionally, the city released 20 minutes of body camera footage from the officer leading the initial response. The heavily edited video depicts a chaotic scene, with officers unsure if the shooter was still inside the building. Backpacks, gloves, and other items scattered throughout the building serve as a stark reminder of the panic and confusion that ensued.
"Let's get these rescues in, where should we stage them?" the unidentified officer says in the video. He later cautions, "Shooter might still be in the building, use caution." Long portions of the video are either blacked out or have audio redacted, with officials defending their decision to release only one video, claiming it provides the most comprehensive view.
Mayor Smiley argued that releasing more videos wouldn't answer the crucial question of why the shooter targeted the university. "Why did this person do this? None of those videos will provide that answer," he said.
Other audio captures officers discussing a possible sighting of the shooter on the second floor of another building and a report of a suspect being taken into custody, only to discover it was a maintenance worker. It's unclear when officers realized their mistake, but within minutes, they instructed, "We're gonna work on the premise that that's not him. We're gonna conduct a secondary search."
The city released these records after waiting at the request of the victims' families, who wanted to hold a memorial service first. Mayor Smiley spoke with the victims and their families, describing them as "remarkably strong and resilient."
On December 13th, gunman Claudio Neves Valente, 48, entered a study session and opened fire, killing 19-year-old Ella Cook and 18-year-old MukhammadAziz Umurzokov, and wounding nine others. A police incident report reiterated the emotional response of hospitalized victims when shown photos of the suspected shooter.
One victim "quickly froze, physically pushed back, and began crying and shaking" upon confirming the image matched their shooter. Another victim "took a deep breath, shut his eyes, and changed his breathing pattern" before confirming the shooter's identity.
Authorities revealed that Neves Valente, a former graduate student at Brown studying physics in the 2000-01 school year, also fatally shot Massachusetts Institute of Technology professor Nuno F.G. Loureiro at his Boston-area home. Neves Valente, who attended school with Loureiro in Portugal in the 1990s, was found dead days later in a New Hampshire storage facility.
The Justice Department has since stated that Neves Valente planned the attack for years and left behind videos confessing to the killings but offering no motive. The FBI recovered these videos during a search of the storage facility.
