A Humpback Whale Was Spotted Dragging an Astonishing Amount of Fishing Gear, Revealing a Dire Threat to Marine Life.
Imagine this: a breathtaking scene off the Hawaiian coast, where two magnificent humpback whales are gliding through the ocean. For underwater photographer John Kowitz and his team, it was a moment of awe, until they deployed a drone to get a closer look. What they discovered was far from serene – it was a stark and heartbreaking reality.
But here's where it gets truly alarming: the drone's footage revealed that one of the whales was ensnared in a horrifying amount of fishing gear. Hundreds of feet of fishing line and heavy chains were deeply embedded in its skull, a cruel burden this gentle giant was forced to drag through the vast ocean. It's a powerful visual that underscores the devastating impact of human activity on these majestic creatures.
Despite its obvious distress, the whale wasn't alone. It had a companion, perhaps a testament to the strong social bonds within whale pods, offering silent support to its suffering friend. This companionship, while heartwarming, also highlighted the helplessness of the situation for Kowitz and his team.
Fortunately, the captain of their boat possessed specialized training in whale disentanglement. Recognizing the severity of the situation, he immediately contacted the relevant authorities at NOAA. With a permit secured to document the animal, the team was authorized to begin their crucial work.
"For two and a half hours we took drone photos, topside DSLR photos, and Insta360 underwater footage to capture imagery of the nature of the entanglement in order to provide the NOAA response team with as much information as possible so they could organize a plan effectively," Kowitz shared. This meticulous documentation was vital for the rescue team to strategize their approach.
Kowitz explained to The Dodo that while his crew desperately wanted to intervene directly, they lacked the specialized tools and expertise required for such a delicate operation. The only course of action was to wait for the trained rescue professionals.
And this is the part most people miss: the sheer dedication and effort involved in these rescues. Once the NOAA response team arrived, they "worked tirelessly for five hours." Their perseverance paid off with an incredible outcome: they successfully removed an astounding 251 feet of line, 10 feet of chain, and several hooks from the whale.
"All in all, an approximate 320 feet of gear was removed from the whale," Kowitz stated. A critical, asymmetrical cut was made near the whale's mouth, a maneuver designed to allow the remaining line to slip free easily now that the immense drag had been eliminated.
Kowitz elaborated to PetaPixel that the NOAA team strategically attached buoys to the fishing line. This ingenious tactic served to slow the whale down, creating a crucial window for the rescuers to get close enough to perform the intricate cutting of the lines.
"This was one of the most successful disentanglement efforts of the season, and this whale will most likely survive to live a much longer and healthy life once given time to recover," Kowitz expressed, emphasizing the critical role his boat played in facilitating the rescue.
He further recounted to The Dodo how the whale's immediate reaction upon being freed was palpable. "The rescuers said the whale immediately started swimming faster and moving around a lot, like it had a newfound sense of freedom." This vivid description paints a powerful picture of the relief experienced by the animal.
Kowitz uses his experiences to advocate for greater ocean stewardship. "The entanglements are happening more frequently due to commercial fishing increases," he warned. He shared that he has witnessed similar incidents before, including with a mobula ray in Mexico, and frequently sees sharks entangled in fishing lines.
