CEO Marc Winterhoff, in a letter obtained by TechCrunch, explained the layoffs as a step towards 'improving operational effectiveness and optimizing resources' on the road to profitability. This move has raised eyebrows, especially given the absence of any official Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) for Arizona, despite federal requirements for advance notice in mass layoffs.
Winterhoff emphasized streamlining operations and focusing on high-impact areas. Interestingly, the layoffs won't hinder the company's plans for its midsize vehicle rollout or its expansion into the robotaxi market.
Lucid's partnership with Uber, announced in July 2025, involves Uber's commitment to purchasing 20,000 vehicles equipped with the Nuro Driver over six years. These robotaxis, retrofitted Lucid Gravity SUVs with Nuro Inc.'s self-driving technology powered by NVIDIA, are already being tested in San Francisco, with plans for further expansion.
