Pat Riley Statue Unveiled: A Tribute to the Legendary Lakers Coach (2026)

A true legend of the NBA, Pat Riley, has been immortalized in bronze outside the Crypto.com Arena. The statue, standing at an impressive 8 feet tall and weighing 510 pounds, captures Riley's iconic style, showcasing him in his signature Giorgio Armani suit and a crocodile leather belt.

But here's where it gets controversial... Riley, a Hall of Fame coach and current team president of the Miami Heat, believes that NBA coaches should dress to impress. He laments the casual dress code adopted by the league, stating, "I wish it went back to coat and ties." Riley argues that an audience deserves to see a leader who looks, dresses, and acts like one.

The NBA Coaches Association, however, voted to keep the relaxed look, which was introduced during the 2020 bubble.

The statue's pose is a nod to Riley's legendary 'Showtime' era with the Lakers. He is depicted with his right fist raised high, a signal used during the 1980s to have Magic Johnson pass the ball to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar for his iconic skyhook.

The unveiling ceremony was a star-studded affair, attended by basketball legends like Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and Dwyane Wade, as well as acclaimed actor Michael Douglas. Douglas revealed that his slick-backed hairdo in the movie "Wall Street" was inspired by Riley's immovable hair while driving his red Mercury convertible.

Riley coached the Lakers from 1981 to 1990, winning four championships during that time. He is now the eighth Laker to be honored with a statue on Star Plaza, joining the likes of Elgin Baylor, Kobe Bryant, and Shaquille O'Neal.

"I'm so grateful to be honored and to be with those who are the giants that I jumped up on their shoulders and they carried me," Riley said.

The statue's base bears an inspiring inscription: "When you are challenged, plant your feet, stand firm, and make a point about who you are, what you do, and where you come from."

Riley also shared his thoughts on current Lakers players LeBron James and JJ Redick. He recruited James to play for the Heat in 2010, forming a formidable trio with Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh. Riley believes that team could have been a dynasty, but understands the business side of the NBA and wishes James had stayed for a few more years.

Riley endorsed Redick, praising his fiery spirit and exceptional shooting abilities. He believes Redick has the potential to be a great coach and is excited about the team's prospects with players like Luka Doni, Austin Reaves, and LeBron James.

So, what do you think? Should NBA coaches dress more formally, or is the relaxed look here to stay? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
